Visit the Goldfields

This site provides your essential pathways to experiencing Western Australia’s remarkable Goldfields.

Late in the 19th century, fortune-seekers from all points of the globe descended upon Coolgardie, over 500 kilometres east of Perth, WA’s coastal capital. By the early 20th century, the region was a thriving network of new gold discoveries, from Kalgoorlie to Kanowna to Broad Arrow to Menzies to Kookynie to Laverton to Leonora, and all points in between.

With each successive discovery came a new wave of adventurers and, very soon, the region was one of the most cosmopolitan places on the Australian continent.

These intrepid gold-seekers came from the other Australian colonies, and direct from many other countries around the world. For the Aboriginal people who had inhabited the region for millennia, these exotic newcomers represented a threat to their very survival, and they were to have profound effect on their culture and lifestyle.

When touring the goldfields today, you’ll still encounter people from all parts of the globe. Some will be fellow visitors, others will be among the tens of thousands of residents who have chosen to call the Goldfields ‘home’.

The GOLDFIELDS TOURISM NETWORK is all about bringing people together in a rewarding exploration of a region that has contributed significantly to the fortunes of Australia as a nation. It is a region of surprisingly diverse landscapes, of remarkably rich history and heritage, and of great experiences for the contemporary traveller. Enjoy!
